Philosophy
My work is largely intuitive and spontaneous, and I draw from memory and experience as well as visual triggers. I try to convey an aura or emotion with partially and simply described objects rather than literal recordings of what I see. I use a variety of mark-making with a restless style of broken line and pattern and much of my life drawing is done with watercolour pencils as I begin to ‘paint’ with them, often drawing back into the overall colour afterwards. I love freshness and immediacy to convey a suggestion of a feeling, person or place and use colour to create sensation or emotion. When I paint on silk I want to create a dynamic but balanced mix of colour and form by painting rapidly using both intense and subtle colour. I am inspired by many artists, many from the St Ives School and some of my favourites are David Hockney, Terry Frost, Patrick Heron, Roger Hilton, Matisse + Picasso, Mary Fedden, Brian Winter, Ben Nicholson, Winifred Nicholson, Henri Gaudier Brzska and well as Vermeer, Goya, …………………………………
